Cap'n Dave with a 'Learn to Sail' Class
Each
of the three days of the course starts with a hearty home-cooked breakfast
followed by a 1½-hour classroom session in the Mansion House library,
then 6
hours of on-water instruction on the bay with a stop for lunch midway through the day. The Offshore Sailing School course and the
instructors who teach it are US Sailing certified. US Sailing is the
governing body of sailing in the United States, and Steve Colgate, who
founded Offshore Sailing School in 1964, was asked to head up the program
that created the certification levels for beginning and advanced sailors.
Over 100,000 adults have completed Offshore courses, with more than 90% of
the school's Learn to Sail students passing the certification test with a
score of 95% or more.
Mansion House provides 'welcome home' cookies and cake each
day for its sailor guests after a satisfying work-out on the water, 'just
the right warmth and ambiance that makes this learning experience so special
for our clients,' says Doris Colgate, co-owner and CEO of the 40-year-old
Offshore Sailing School.
The
Learn to Sail course is taught on award-winning Colgate 26 sailboats, chosen
by the U.S. Naval Academy and popular among recreational and racing sailors
alike. Designed with safety, performance and comfort in mind, the Colgate 26
won the coveted 'Cruising World' magazine 'Boat of the Year' award shortly
after its debut in 1997.
